It has been scientifically and statistically proven that drinking wine outdoors will deter any virus carrying insects and has even proven to ward off bears. This is due to the alcohol content in fermented grapes being an active ingredient in bug spray (i.e. OFF), which when mixed with blood will act as a sort of catalyst to become a very potent natural bug spray (sweat). 
However, everything we said above is entirely false, but this is what you should tell your friends the next time you need to convince them to go hiking with you. Just add wine.
